RELAX...It's Lavender take one

Listen to Ladies in Lavender by Joshua Bell
by Mary Pereira

My very first encounter with the word, Lavender, was in the nursery rhyme, Lavender Blue, written in 1680. The word Lavender intrigued me because there was only a drawing of the flower in the book, and I had no idea what the fragrance was like.  Now that I know, I will never forget the smell, or how it made me feel.  I bought a bottle of Lavender Essential oil, brought it home, and couldn't stop smelling it.  The next thing I knew I was knocked out for a few hours.  It really does work to relax you, so you can sleep sweetly, my Friend.

Burl Ives was one of my favorite singers. His voice was in familiar children's shows and very distinguishable. Burl Ives sang Lavender Blue, which is also a beautiful English Folksong.  But if you are not a fan of Burl Ives and are in the mood to relax, marvel at some gorgeous photos of Lavender, then I think you will love this video...And I highly recommend that you watch the movie titled "Ladies in Lavender" as well, which features in the song above by the same title, in the soundtrack by Joshua Bell. Sit back and enjoy the music...

Ancient Lavender & the Whole Picture
Where have you been? Lavender has been around a long time, and as far as recorded history can tell, has been used for over 2,500 years.  It goes all the way back to the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Arabians for the use of perfume and for the mummification of their loved ones.
Lavender is mentioned in the Bible by a different name - spikenard taken from the Greek word naardus preceding the city in Syria, Narada....which sounds very similar to the city of Narnia in C. S. Lewis's chronicles. Lavender (spikenard) is mentioned in the Bible in...

Song of Solomon 4:13-15 - New King James Version (NKJV)

Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates
With pleasant fruits,
Fragrant henna with spikenard,
14 Spikenard and saffron,
Calamus and cinnamon,
With all trees of frankincense,
Myrrh and aloes,
With all the chief spices—
15 A fountain of gardens,
A well of living waters,
And streams from Lebanon.
By the way, Solomon writes about the precious wedding night and the Bride bringing herself as a gift, unblemished because she is a virgin, so beautiful as precious fruits and spices to her
Bridegroom. Lavender is very special. Lavender is also mention another time in the Bible in

Mark 14:3-9 - New King James Version (NKJV)

The Anointing at Bethany 3 And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. 4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply. 6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. 7 For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always. 8 She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. 9 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
In this passage, we see how precious and expensive Lavender was to use, even way back then, during the time of Jesus. Lavender comes from the word Lavandula, taken from the Latin word, lavare, which means to wash. It's interesting to me that Jesus' feet were washed after being anointed by Lavender in the above passage...don't you think, Beloved?
